A profusion of flavour at The Cookery School at The Grand, York

The Cookery School at The Grand, York will be opening its doors to aspiring chefs with bags of, or no experience in the flair of culinary finesse on Friday 1 March.

With an ever-growing interest across all age groups from Mary Berry’s generation to micro-gappers, the story of food is an evolving tale. People are increasingly scrutinising the ingredients in their meals to identify sustainable food products and healthy components. Instagram accounts are flooded with foodie images; culinary theatre inside and live cooking demonstrations outside are no longer unusual. Over the past few years, eating has been about much more than just taste, a notion conceptualised by The Grand, York in the development of its brand-new cookery school.

Described as ‘a place to relax, have fun, make friends, and learn something new’, the school will be run by head chef tutor, Andrew Dixon, offering a selection of 43 cooking classes for all ages, tastes and abilities. Bringing with him a wealth of experience in culinary excellence and a postgraduate certificate in education, he is no stranger to the art of teaching and gastronomy.

From close-to-home modern British dishes to authentic Asian cuisines, inspiration is infinite in the recipes being cooked up by Andrew and his team. With a focus on worldwide specialities, guests can benefit from widespread expertise under one roof.

Bookers will have the chance to instigate impressive proficiency in South American meals rich in flavours such as chorizo red pepper empanadas with chimichurri sauce, originating in Argentina and Uruguay. Crossing the borders through the Gulf of Mexico, the popular tortilla will be reimagined in a spicy smoked marinade made from scratch with perfectly cooked succulent steak. A wealth of cultures is ready to be explored, along with classic Yorkshire specialities, the innovation of vegetarianism and a generous variety of indulgent bakery bliss.

As well as accommodating leisure guests, the classes are set to add a dynamic and immersive element to The Grand, York’s conference and events venture for business clientele. Whatever the purpose of your visit, the recipes will be taught in such a way that they’re easy to recreate at home, whether cooking for yourself, family or a larger scale dinner party.
