Effective anti-ageing treatments that make you look younger

June 5, 2019

As we grow older, we cannot escape the natural process of ageing. We start to see wrinkles around our eyes, lips and forehead, as well as losing volume, which causes the skin around the face and neck to sag. With wrinkles becoming more prominent, it can be quite challenging to simply to try to ignore the signs of ageing.

Luckily, there are several treatments, either non-invasive or surgical, which can help turn back time and make you appear younger.

Symmetry Clinic outlines three popular, effective anti-ageing treatments to consider.

Botox

Botox is one of the most common preventative measures, used to fight off wrinkles, without having to resort to drastic surgical options. Botulinum toxin, a purified version of the toxin from botulinum bacteria, can be injected to relax the muscles that cause forehead creases, crow’s feet and wrinkles. This procedure only takes around 10 minutes to complete and are relatively painless.

After the treatment is finished, it can take three to five days before you see a difference and up to two weeks to see the full effect. In areas where you have gotten the injections, your skin will be noticeably smoother, as the toxins have softened the harsh lines and wrinkles.

Botox isn’t a permanent treatment, so you’ll need to have with regular follow-up injections every 3 to 6 months to maintain the effect.

Dermal Fillers

From birth, we have an abundance of collagen within our skin, which gives us a youthful appearance. However, as we get older, there is a decline in the production of collagen. Experts say that by your mid-twenties, your body’s collagen production slows down and continues to decrease after you turn thirty.

As such, to achieve a youthful appearance, dermal fillers can be injected into any area of the body, in order to fill in the wrinkles, restore lost volume and plump up problematic areas.

Dermal filler treatment can take around 30 minutes to an hour to complete. Before the procedure, you may be given a local anaesthetic cream or injection. Depending on the type of filler you have selected, results can be temporary or permanent:

Collagen: effects can last up to four months
Hyaluronic acid: effects can last up to six months
Calcium hydroxyapatite: effects can last up to 18 months
Poly-L-lactic acid: effects can last up to 2 years

It is important to discuss each type of filler with your chosen clinic. Some will not be available, whilst others may not be recommended for you.

Facelift surgery

Facelift surgery reduces the sagging skin around the lower half of the face and neck, making your skin tighter and smoother. There are several types of facelift technique, all of which can boost your confidence and make you look younger. Each method has varying degrees of invasiveness, and generally the more invasive the procedure, the longer the effects will last.

Facelift surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic, after which the surgeon makes incisions above the hairline to begin the procedure. There will not be any visible scarring, as the incisions are hidden within the fold and hairline.

If you’re thinking of going ahead with any of these anti-ageing treatments, don’t rush your decision and make sure you consider the benefits and risks, as well as the cost factor involved in each. Frequent Botox and dermal filler injections can add up and become very expensive, whilst facelift surgery is invasive and can totally alter an appearance. Always carry out the necessary research beforehand.
