Enoteca Rabezzana simple, traditional and authentic, Italian cuisine at its finest
January 24, 2019
The décor at Enoteca Rabezzana is simple, traditional and authentic – in many ways what Italian food should be. Just outside Smithfield market in Clerkenwell, its selling point is the 120 bottles of wine sourced from small producers around Italy which line the walls. Don’t be overwhelmed though – the knowledgeable sommelier can help you navigate the extensive range though and his suggestions were one of the highlights of the night.
The full-bodied Castello di Gabbiano Chianti from the daily selection of wines by the glass was the perfect pairing to the cured meat and cheese board with delicious homemade bread. We couldn’t resist trying the XXL Parma ham, aged for over 40 months, which we were told was ‘the best you’ll find outside of Italy’ – and we can’t disagree. The ‘egg 63’ is also worth a try – an egg slow-cooked at 63 degrees and topped with the perfect combination of parmigiano fondue and fresh truffle.
For mains, the waiter recommended the braised ox cheeks which were beautifully cooked and served with a delicious Italian twist. We also opted for the signature pici pasta with pecorino cheese sauce, black paper and fresh black truffle, which was perfectly indulgent without being too heavy. The food was delicious, but the star of the show had to be the Sordo Barolo red wine – earthy, fruity and locally sourced by the owners.
Desserts are a simple affair, homemade and changing daily. The waiters recite the different choices and flavours like the back of their hand. From start to finish the service was great and the passion and knowledge of the staff shone through. Finish the evening with a shot of limoncello – or another glass of wine – after all you’re spoilt for choice.
