Foxhills Country Club – A perfect destination

Set in the village of Ottershaw in leafy green Surrey, you can experience health, beauty, golf and good food all under one roof. Just a short drive from both the M25 and M3, this is a popular club resort for locals and visitors from all over the world. It has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages but has been owned by the Hayton family for over 35 years.

Featuring two championship golf courses and a par three course (most unusual), visitors can also enjoy squash, tennis, four different swimming pools, spa treatments as well as three restaurants with varying styles of food. There is no need to leave this estate with its lovely Manor House – everything is on hand and its service with a smile. Even though the obvious attraction to this venue is the excellent golf facilities, you can pop into Foxhills for a business breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner whenever you want. Sunday roast is also available, as well as snacks throughout the day.

Breakfast here is as you would expect, both continental and traditional English fare available. Large platters of fresh fruits, great selection of bread and pastries – a plus point is that your main hot breakfast is served at the table, and not self-service as some hotels have adopted for ease. Served by well-dressed courteous staff, you can relax in the surroundings for as long as you want.

Whether you are relaxing in the spa or playing golf, you are in for a huge treat. Both the 18-hole courses provide a picturesque setting amongst parkland and heathland through tall trees and immaculately kept greens. We played on the Bernard Hunt Course which is quite challenging with difficult par fours, but the greens are a sheer delight when you see your ball roll so easily towards the hole. Without a doubt, a lot of time is spent by the greenkeepers here to keep the course so well-manicured. This is one of the factors why Foxhills is rated in the top 100 courses in Great Britain – a huge accolade. You could not wish for a much better course to play.

Lunch at Foxhills is a casual affair serving light bites and some more substantial dishes. You have a choice of ‘grab and go’, or something more relaxing. You wouldn’t go far wrong by choosing ‘Nineteen’, where most golfers gather to discuss their game – it’s located close to the shared eighteenth greens of both the championship courses. The menu is casual and brasserie-style, and you can choose from items such as tempura prawns, sticky chicken, omelettes, burgers and steaks, to name but a few.

Alternatively, you may like ‘The Woodie’ where you can get sandwiches, pies and other snacks if you are in a hurry. Adjacent to the tennis pavilion, it really is a convenient location.

As we were staying overnight, we opted to have dinner in the evening after a tremendous game of golf on the Bernard Hunt Course. Dinner is served in The Fox dining rooms and depending on whether you can eat outside on the terrace. The interior, however, has recently been redesigned and is now an elegant but informal dining experience.
The menu is quite compact, but with choices to suit anyone’s palate. We opted for Duck Liver Parfait and Game Bird Terrine to start. Duck Liver Parfait can be quite rich, but the sweetness of the plums and almonds used in the dish really enhanced the flavour. The Game Bird terrine was served with delicious sweet beetroots and a beetroot mayo, again introducing a slight sweetness to the earthy game.

Our mains consisted of Pork Belly which was deliciously crispy on the outside and was accompanied by apple puree and cavolo nero. The Cod dish, which was our other choice, was silky and beautifully cooked with black garlic and squid. Another great dish.

It’s fair to say after a challenging day of golf and a delicious dinner, it didn’t take long to collapse into Foxhills comfortable bed and have a blissful nights’ sleep. We shall return.
