Chotto Matte most famous for its delicious Nikkei cuisine

We had the pleasure of being invited to dine in one of Londons best fusion restaurants located in Soho, Chotto Matte. Serving the best combination of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, with the exquisite décor of bold bright colours taking every experience to a whole new level.

Chotto Matte is famously known for its Nikkei cuisine, which is a mixture of the finest Japanese and Peruvian food.  A detailed and vast variety of fresh fish, seasonal ingredients, off the grill as well as Japanese sushi and sashimi.

We arrived at the restaurant at around 7 o’clock on a Sunday evening in London, and to our surprise, it was booming with life and atmosphere and nearly every table full. The moment we walked through the door, we were transported to a different world with a chic yet colourful and bold interior.

We were warmly welcomed as we arrived, and asked if we would either like a drink at the bar to begin our evening or to be seated immediately. Due to us being extremely hungry we decided to be seated straight away. The tables were set beautifully, they were low to give that authentic Japanese experience, the tables were also set with chopsticks and romantic candlelight. This was a lovely touch as it made us feel like we were transported to Japan.

Within minutes of sitting down, we were greeted by our wonderful waiter Sabi. He had an extremely warm and welcoming touch and we instantly felt relaxed. We were offered a Pisco Sour as our cocktail to begin the meal. A Pisco Sour is an alcoholic cocktail of Peruvian origin that is typical of the cuisines from Peru and Chile. The Peruvian Pisco Sour uses Peruvian Pisco as the base liquor and adds freshly squeezed lime juice, simple syrup, ice, egg white and Angostura bitters. It was absolutely breathtaking and an excellent way to start our culinary journey.

The menu has a vast variety of options to choose from, sharing dishes, sashimi dishes, robata grill and tempura options. As this was our first time visiting, we wanted some guidance through the menu, navigating the best options to be able to taste all the various dishes.
.
Our waiter first asked us if we have dietary requirements, this is always so important, especially in a fast pace restaurant. Both of us are huge foodies and enjoy trying all elements of every cuisine and cultural food, however, we were asked if there was anything we don’t enjoy eating or won’t eat, of course, the answer was ‘no’.

Sabi, our waiter carefully went through the options he had chosen for us, this came from every aspect of the menus and flavours. Including a vegan option, fish, meat, vegetables, sushi, different levels of spice. We were told that the food would all come out at separate times, like a grazing meal which we personally love and means that the experience isn’t over and done within an hour or so.

We started with the Padrón peppers, these were BBQ Spanish sweet peppers in den miso. This was an excellent first course as it was extremely light, yet delicious and not too filling. This was shortly followed by the Yellowtail Nikkei Sashimi, which was served with cherry tomatoes, jalapeño coriander and yuzu truffle soy. The flavours and presentation of the dish were like nothing we had ever tasted or seen before, it completely took us to the heart of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine.

After we had finished these two dishes, our plates and chopsticks were cleared and replaced with new ones, keeping our eating space always spotless and clean. We had a short break in between meals in which we were offered some more drinks and a water top-up.

The next dish to come out was the Spicy tuna crispy rice, a personal favourite of ours, it was spicy yet simple with tremendous flavours. This was served with spicy mayo, spring onions and cress. After this was followed by four other dishes including sea bass sashimi, lychee ceviche, snow crab croquetas and dragon roll, one from each section of the menu, it was a veritable feast for the eyes and taste buds, totally delicious and faultless.

Our entire experience at Chotto Matte was perfection, the service from Sabi was extra special, his knowledge was exemplary and we enjoyed his explanation of every dish and restaurant history.

We will definitely return for our next special occasion, maybe Valentine’s Day!
