Get Your Name in Print at the Immortality Auction
November 11, 2016
Calling all literature lovers – you now have the thoroughly novel chance to become immortal! A unique auction is offering bidders the chance to be named as a character in an upcoming book by a renowned author, at the human rights charity Freedom from Torture Immortality Auction.
British literary heavyweights, including some of the most prestigious writers of our time have offered to donate character naming rights to auction winners. Michael Morpurgo, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Tracy Chevalier, Ian McEwan, Esther Freud, Louis de Bernieres, Rose Tremain, William Boyd, Linda Grant, Chris Cleave, Eleanor Catton, Jonathan Coe, Maggie O’Farrell and Philip Pullman are among the international prize-winning list of authors participating in the auction.
Tracy Chevalier bestselling author of eight novels, including ‘At the Edge of the Orchard’ and ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ (which has sold over 5 million internationally) told us about her “My next book will be set in and around Winchester Cathedral during the 1930s. If you are a man, you will be a bell ringer there; if a woman, you will embroider cushions and kneelers that can still be seen today in the Cathedral choir stalls. Think bicycles, calf-length olive green wool skirts, cribbage at the pub, and the petty politics of volunteer groups, all set against the beauty of a great gothic cathedral and the rising fascism on the Continent that is finding toeholds in Britain.”
All those wanting to take place online bids can visit the site www.immortalityauction.org ahead of the live auction, which takes place on the 17th November at Sixty One Whitehall, hosted by fellow comedian and author Alexei Sayle. Here, guests will be treated to drinks and canapés, readings from selected authors as well as from clients of Freedom from Torture’s creative writing therapy group, Write to Life.
All proceeds will go directly towards helping survivors of torture rebuild their lives through UK human rights charity Freedom from Torture, which has centres in London, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. We couldn’t think of more worthy cause!
