M Restaurant Twickenham – Gastro Glam & Superb Steaks
January 2, 2018
The M Restaurant empire continues to grow… and grow… and quite frankly we couldn’t be happier! M Twickenham is the latest restaurant offering from Martin Williams whose two already successful predecessors in Threadneedle Street in the City and also on Victoria Street in Victoria continue to thrive (they’ve just launched a wine bar too) – testament to their fabulous food.
If you don’t live in the area, you’ll be pleased to hear M Twickenham is extremely accessible, located right outside Twickenham train station with regular fast trains to Waterloo and Clapham Junction.
It’s cosy and unpretentious yet slick and extremely modern with a gorgeous bar area and relaxed seating to the front, with the dining area hidden from immediate view from the entrance.
We thought it only right to start with the cocktail test after which we were suitably impressed. I tried the Lemon Meringue Pie concoction (very reasonably priced at just £7.50), which would you believe, tasted exactly like a lemon meringue – the tang, courtesy of the lemon and mint-infused vodka and topped with foam to make it even more dessert like. Having successfully whetted our appetites, we were keen to see the food menu, and so took to a cosy booth in the restaurant.
There were two starters that I was desperate to try, having eyed up the menu on the way over on the train, so I was extremely happy when my friend ordered my second choice! I went for the absolutely gorgeous Wagyu Scotch Egg (£7.95) with a lovely blend of spiced beef, a really tasty slow cooked egg and a creamy dijonnaise dressing. My companion absolutely loved the Fried Jerk Chicken (£9.95) – just the right amount of crispy coating around the chicken and a firecracker mayonnaise to add some kick!
M prides itself on the very finest steaks and in fact is only one of two in London who stock the precious grade 10++ kobe beef. However, on a low key Tuesday evening, we didn’t really feel the need to quite splash out to that extent and were extremely pleased to discover that the fillet and ribeye were beautifully tasty offerings – especially when accompanied by the most amazing triple cooked M Chips (£4.50) perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and a nice big helping of Truffle Mac ‘n’ Cheese which was an absolute delight with just the right amount of truffle and plenty of cheese. The lemon crumb and parmesan on top added some serious flavour.
All of M’s beef comes from the O’Shea family farm in Perthshire, Scotland, but there’s plenty of choice if you’re not a steak lover. Aside from the Fillet (£34 for 250g) and the Sirloin (£34.75 for 400g), they also have fish and chips, rotisserie chicken, pork shoulder (and for vegetarians, the smoked cauliflower) – it’s a really compact but punchy, well thought out menu.
After a couple more glasses of one of M’s Collection range red wines, we tried hard to resist dessert, but in the end, were swayed by a Bakewell Tart (£7.50) that Mr Kipling would be proud of!
M is an amazingly cool restaurant concept and yes it may be well known for its steak, but it delivers a great quality meal every time I eat there. M Twickenham may not be as glamorous as M City and M Victoria, but it’s local, friendly, gastro vibe makes it the perfect stop off for food or a wine any night of the week.
