Made from a blend of 50% Cinsault, 40% Grenache Noir and 10% Mourvèdre, Le Météore is a pale, AOP Faugères rosé with a slight rose flower tinge. The nose is both expressive and delicate with aromas of strawberry, redcurrant and melon and floral overtone of peonies. About Domaine du Météore

The domaine is situated in the village of Cabrerolles, at over 300 metres of altitude in the foothills of the Haut-Languedoc mountains. The rocky, schistous terroir is rarely found elsewhere, and the domaine is unique in having vines in two of the area’s most famous appellations: Faugères and Saint-Chinian (Roquebrun). The structure of the soils differs between appellations – Faugères is predominantly composed of blue schist, while Saint-Chinian is dominated by yellow schist – allowing the domaine to explore and compare their influence. Surrounded by garrigue with the scent of wild thyme, fennel and mint. Farmed organically for over 10 years, the domaine is now in biodynamic conversion.

About The Meteor Crater

At the heart of the vineyard lies a huge crater, created by the massive impact of a twenty metre-wide bolide meteorite (an extremely bright meteor which explodes in the atmosphere), travelling in from south to north. At a mere ten thousand years old, it is one of the youngest of the known craters on the planet, one of the 50 largest in the world and the most easily identifiable in France.

The resulting effects on the land show remarkable similarities to the mile-long meteor crater in Arizona, the most famous in the world. In addition, evidence suggests that there are another six smaller craters in the Faugères region, reflecting the direction of impact and fragmentation of the main meteorite which fell on the land. These are all believed to have been a siderite or iron meteorite, an extremely rare type containing iron and nickel, considered by specialists as the stars of meteorites. The structure of the rock beneath the crater is unique to areas of meteorite impact, with its high iron content resulting in as much as a ten degree change in the magnetic direction of a compass held in the crater depth, compared to that at the edge.

Within the bowl of the crater itself are Syrah vines, planted in two stages in 1984 and 1992. The grapes, and the wines produced from them, taste quite unlike anything else grown in the region or in France – the effect of Domaine du Météore’s astronomical history.
