Schloss Reinhartshausen 2012 Marcobrunn Riesling Sekt Extra Brut

Origin: Their vineyards are maintained and self-managed with a great deal of expertise and plenty of work carried out of hand. Healthy, ripe grapes create a wine that is the best ambassador of its origin. After careful hand selection and gentle pressing, the quality of the vines is preserved and developed further in the cellar.

Vintage: After an unstable winter which was extremely cold in February, their wines started bubbling at the end of April which compared to previous years, was rather late. After the dangers of May frost had been the weather, growth was increased by rapidly rising temperatures. The beginning of blossoming on the 6th of June, which was one week before the average date over a long period of years within a normal framework. Since blossoming was delayed and slow because of low night temperatures and related damage. One was already able to predict in June that an early harvest starts as in the record year 2011 would be unlikely. Sadly, the yields of their white, grey, and Spätburgunder of below 40hl/ha were once again very low. On the other hand, the Riesling met their expectations bringing them healthy grapes right into November, thus fulfilling market standards of a good vintage. Although there were not any must weight peaks as in 2011. They produced excellent cabinet and late harvest wines, as well as first growth and noble sweet wines made of grapes, harvested from the end of October to the beginning of November. They have used these high-quality grapes pressed in their traditional basket presses for the second year running, to produce brilliant, delicate wines that demonstrate the many facetted characters of their Terroir.

Vineyard: The Marcobrunn site is a slightly sloping southern site within the boundaries of Erbach. Its name is dated to the 13th century and stems from a spring on the border between Erbach and Hattenheim. The vine area, which is only 6.7 hectares, grows only Riesling. Heavy loess loam and chalky soil out of marl with sand ensure a perfect nutrient supply and regulates the water levels during the dry periods.
