Supper Club with Rich Woods
Franklin & Sons, the premium soft drink, tonic and mixer brand, launched their ‘Flavour Collection’ tonic water 4 pack, with a pop-up Supper Club experience at London’s trending new social space: The Private Dining Room at Hicce. I was fortunate to be invited to the intimate cocktail-driven dining experience.
Franklin & Sons four pack ‘Flavour Collection’, includes the following tonic waters that pair beautifully with a range of spirits. These are great for ‘at home bartender experimentation’ especially in the lead up to Summer for summer soirées and BBQs. The Franklin & Sons Flavours and expert ‘Flavour Collection’ pairing suggestions are:
Rosemary Tonic Water with Black Olive – Sherries /Mediterranean style gins
Pink Grapefruit Tonic Water with Bergamot – Blanco tequila /floral gins /those using tea as a botanical
Elderflower Tonic Water with Cucumber – Dry vermouths /citrusy gins delivering lemon, lime or grapefruit notes
Rhubarb Tonic Water with Hibiscus – Spiced rum/ vodkas /spiced gins full of cinnamon, cardamom and anise
Franklin & Sons
The supper club was full of surprises with trend led cocktails being the centre-stage of the evening, created with the ‘Flavour Collection’ by the world-renowned and Franklin & Sons Taste Collective ambassador, Rich Woods, The Cocktail Guy. The bespoke serves were perfectly paired with the changing seasonal ingredients and the freshest flavours of spring in a four-course menu selected by acclaimed chef, Pip Lacey.
1. The Aperitivo Cocktail paired with rye and beer bread, mussel salad and venison saucisson.
2. The Tropical Soda paired with Carrot and onion kaki-age (tempura) and lemon mayonnaise with cayenne.
3. Jasmine & Pink Grapefruit Elegante paired with Chicken thigh, leek, sunflower seed pesto, tarragon oil and shiso.
4. Americano Americano paired with Ginger Parkin, ginger ice cream and rhubarb.
The night was focused around how new innovative dual flavoured craft tonics are shaping cocktails and changing the way we work with spirits.
Throughout the FOUR meal course Rich Wood presented the collaborated culinary creations and even made time for a chat with me around tonic as a category, and what’s to come next:
Why do you love your collaboration with Franklin & Sons and what should we expect in the future in terms of collaborations? “Everybody loves a new and innovative cocktail. I love working with Franklin & Sons, as they help people be able to make their own at home. They have a way of combining the best quality ingredients to make killer drinks that are way ahead of the game like their Rosemary with Black Olive Tonic Water.”
Are the new wave of tonics changing how we make cocktails? “Tonics such as Franklin & Sons’ new dual flavoured range, allow the user to not only add the obvious dilution and fizz to a cocktail but their interesting and creative blends of ingredients adds a melange of flavour – giving a simple drink dimension and additional depth.”
I asked Rich Wood’s to provide our readers with two easy signature cocktails that can be prepared at home using the delicious Franklin & Sons Flavour Collection:
“Jasmine & Grapefruit Eleganté”
20ml Jasmine Tea Syrup*
3 Dash Tarragon & Grapefruit Bitters**
50-60ml Franklin & Sons Pink Grapefruit Tonic with Bergamot.
Add all to a cocktail shaker with cube ice. Mix well to dilute and chill. Strain into a coupette glass and top with tonic.
Garnish with a grapefruit zest.
Infuse 6g Jasmine tea with 700ml sugar syrup and leave to infuse overnight. Strain and bottle.
Infuse 30g (one standard pack) tarragon in Grapefruit bitters (these can be bought from Amazon). Leave overnight and strain then bottle.
50ml Cedars Classic
25ml pineapple & birch bark cordial
1 bar spoon elderflower cordial
2 dash distilled vinegar
65ml Franklin & Sons Pineapple & Cardamom Infused Soda with Cracked Cubeb Pepper
Combine ingredients together.
Garnish with a pineapple.
The Supper Club aim was to encourage more people to discover the very latest trends, but more importantly understand how they can access and even replicate them at home. On the way out we were gifted a ‘Flavour Collection’ goodie bag, to encourage us to experiment and create our own flavour experiences.
