Babbo, a night to remember
It’s such a waste to spend all afternoon at the hair salon having yourself glammed up with nowhere to go, so when I get a call asking me if I’d like to review Babbo Restaurant in Mayfair, I jumped at the opportunity.
I had a little look at the website and I loved the look and ethos of the restaurant, a family run affair, with spectacular food and first class service, what’s not to love.
We decided to drive into London, and luckily enough we were able to park right outside. The restaurant seats around 50-60 people and includes an upstairs pirate dining area. The artwork on the walls was all hand painted and had the story of family life, from childhood to grandparents.
Babbo Restaurant is a very smart and romantic venue, offering contemporary variations of classic cocktails, food and wine that has been carefully sourced from all of the diverse Italian regions, and the waiting staff know everything, from where the various food has come from, how it is cooked and the wine that should be paired with it, it’s truly impressive.
The service was superb, the waiting staff were smartly attired and all looked like they’d just walked off the pages of GQ!
We began our special evening with a glass of champagne while we discussed with Roberto, the Maitre d’ the sharing menu we’d be sampling, we left it up to him, he did us proud, it was a editable feast, for the tastebuds as well as the eyes.
Our starter came in two courses, the first was Fried Gnocchi stuffed with burrata and san Daniele, ham Vou Au Vent stuffed with cream cheese and smoked salmon and Beef tartare Macarons and Foie Gras. Each dish was superb, light and tasty and a real tease for what was to come next. Second we had Tartara di Gamberoni Rossi which is
red prawns from Mazzara del Vallo, spring onion, quinoa cracker, Imperial caviar & apple gazpacho, and Carpaccio di Manzo con Mostarda e Parmigiano this is raw sliced beef fillet with mustard dressing and aged parmesan, the beef was soft and succulent and the prawns tartare were a surprise, I wasn’t sure what to expect, I felt they may bit a bit too fishy, but the whole dish came together in a stunning assortment of subtle flaours.
We has a little digestive break and enjoyed our delicious red wine that was chosen by the Sommelier. And just as we were feeling ready for the main performance in came a gorgeous looking, impressively tall chap, the restaurant was buzzing, and the diners were all hang their photo taken with him. At first glance I thought he looked like a skateboarding star with his beanie and oversized red sweatshirt, bit at a close inspection I recognised him to be David Luiz, a Chelsea football player and part owner of the restaurant, he was totally charming and try obliging with his time, he stopped and talked to every diner. What a star he was, on and off the pitch, it made our evening.
Any way back to the main event, our main course. We shared a Rack of Lamb with pan fried foie gras, spinach, crunchy truffle potatoes, aubergine puree and garlic sour cream and a fabulous pasta dish of green ravioli stuffed with fresh ricotta cheese and aubergine seasoned with butter and sage. The entire meal was so completely sublime, it’s actually really hard to describe how perfect it was, and then to finish with a trio of cheesecake was seriously, excuse the pun, icing on the cake. All of this while enjoying the live music, from a guy with a fabulous voice.
