Quaglino’s – A Sunday Roast With Soul

January 17, 2018

Sunday lunch has to be one of my favorite meals of the week and coming from somebody who eats out pretty much every night, that really is saying something!

One of the best Sunday lunches I’ve experienced in a long time, was the three course set menu from one of my top Central London restaurants – Quaglino’s, who never fail to deliver no matter the time or the day of the week!  With Soul Sundays serving up fluffy roasties and yorkshire puds in a fun, buzzy atmosphere against the backdrop of live soul music, this really is a great weekend experience!

If you’ve never been, Quaglinos’ unassuming entrance reveals a stylish moody bar area, with a beautiful statement staircase which open outs onto a sprawling dining room.  At the far end, the impressive stage area which has hosted many a famous face in the past, is still graced by big name celebrities and Quaglino’s very own house band.  No matter what night you visit on, there’s always a talented act to entertain while you eat.

Unlike lots of set menus, there’s actually a really good variety of dishes to choose from for each course – ensuring you’re catered for no matter what you fancy.  To me though, Sunday lunch will always mean Sunday roast and so, no other dish on the list could sway me once I’d seen the words: roast sirloin of beef, Yorkshire pudding, roasted vegetables and potatoes.  And just when you think Sundays can’t get any better, you hear the fine sound of the cork popping on a fresh bottle of prosecco!  Yes for just £20, you can add in thirst quenching bottomless bubbles for a brilliantly boozy day.

With most of the action centred around the stage and pretty much every table full, the vibe was electric on the weekend we visited.  Families, couples and friends, all enjoying a laid back afternoon, with delicious food and great music.

With no less than seven starters on the menu including beef carpaccio, roast butternut squash, venison tartare, I was delighted to see my favourite Quaglino’s starter available – the Moroccan inspired harissa and agave glazed aubergine, coconut, peanut and pulses.  This is such a great dish with plenty of contrasting textures and flavours and the spices are balanced just beautifully.

My friend ordered the London smoked salmon, a beautiful vibrant plentiful plate with palate pleasing fresh fish, capers and horseradish.  The cute blinis were a lovely addition.

The Sunday roast was I expected it to be – a gigantic Yorkshire pud, rich red wine gravy, fresh veg and plenty of roasties – simply divine.  Needless to say, the combination of bubbles and a huge plate of food had me unable to move, although somehow, I managed to cram in a rich, decadent Valrhona dark chocolate fondant, oozing perfectly when you cut into it.

Because the music was so pleasant and the bubbles flowing, we managed to while a good couple of hours without noticing – Quaglino’s are definitely not shy about refilling your glass!

With two courses at £25 or three courses at £29 and additional bottomless bubbles at £20 per person, it might not be the Sunday lunch you might choose every weekend, but for a special occasion, I can’t recommend it enough!  Just make sure you don’t have Sunday evening plans – your food and prosecco coma will last well into Monday – I can vouch for that!
